The Cooper family lives at 101 Charles Street between its own livery stables

By the middle of the 19th century the Cooper family had its home at No. 101, with William Cooper's livery stables standing on both sides of it. The Landmarks Preservation Commission report says the stables rivaled in size only the large one on Eighth Street near Sixth Avenue. In 1894 the family built apartment houses here.

“In mid-century the Cooper family home had been here on Charles Street, at No. 101, and was flanked on both sides by William Cooper's livery stables…”

In 1894 the architects Weber & Drosser designed Nos. 101, 103 and 105 as matching brick apartment houses on the dumbbell plan. They were commissioned by Catharine, Emma M. and John H. Cooper, with Catharine then the widow of William Cooper. Three gables rise above a deep bracketed cornice, and the doorways have deep pedimented lintels on stone brackets.

“…three similar apartment houses were built in 1894 on the dumbbell plan by Weber & Drosser, architects, for the Cooper family…”
