Bernstein & Bernstein replace two old buildings with a seven-story loft at 101-103 Crosby Street

In 1907 the Mildred Realty Co. built a seven-story store and loft building here to plans by Bernstein & Bernstein. It took the place of two smaller brick buildings from the nineteenth century, part of a wave in which SoHo's remaining small houses gave way to larger lofts. Its stone-banded piers, splayed keystones and copper cornices are typical of Renaissance Revival lofts of the era.

Tailors, rubber makers and canvas makers give way to galleries at 101-103 Crosby Street

For most of the twentieth century 101-103 Crosby Street held garment and light-industry tenants, among them the Freedman Tailoring Co. in 1910, Evans & Rosengarten, clothes makers, in 1914, and C.R. Daniels, marine canvases, from 1934 to 1940. The Westcott Rubber Co. was here in 1950 and a machine-parts maker in 1963. By 1995 the Aquasource Gallery had opened, followed by a gallery called the Painting Apartment in 2000.

“Freedman Tailoring Co. (1910); Evans & Rosengarten, clothes (1914); C.R. Daniels, marine canvasses (1934-40) ... Aquasource Gallery (1995); and the Painting Apartment, gallery (2000)…”
