The house and stable on the future stable site at 134-136 West 10th Street go to auction
The property at Nos. 134 and 136 West 10th Street went under the hammer on April 16, 1873. Its only dwelling was a 25-foot-wide brick house with a yard, probably Federal in style, with a two-story brick stable behind it. Twelve days later the furnishings of the once well-to-do household, including parlor suites, mirrors, paintings and walnut bedsteads, were auctioned. These were an earlier building on the same site, where a grocery firm filed plans for a new stable the next spring.

Architect Charles Wright filed plans in spring 1874 for a stable for Acker, Merrill & Condit, whose upscale grocery stores sold wines, delicacies and cigars to carriage-trade customers. A fourth floor was added before it was done. Wright faced it in red brick with scalloped lintels, a bracketed cornice and a pediment announcing the date. It housed the firm's delivery vehicles and horses.

Acker, Merrill & Co. leased the old stable to the Peerless Trucking Company in December 1918, as motor trucks were replacing horse-drawn drays. By summer 1922 the company was changing over completely, and sold off its stock at 10 a.m. in the stable. The sale offered 27 work horses, 28 trucks of various kinds, 22 sets of harnesses, 32 blankets and the stable utensils.

After decades as a trucking depot and then a garage, the 1874 stable was remade in 2006. The ground floor became a community facility and the upper floors seven apartments.
