Charles L. Calhoun's Chatham Phoenix bank rises at Bowery and Grand Street on a former shooting-gallery lot

The Neo-Classical Chatham Phoenix Bank at 116 Bowery was designed by Charles L. Calhoun and finished in 1923. It has a rusticated limestone base, a terra cotta frieze and Tuscan pilasters, and spans three bays on the Bowery and seven on Grand Street. To make room, a one-story frame shooting gallery owned by A. Cuneo on Grand Street was demolished. Four more stories were later added to house a hotel.
