Between April and July 1877, John G. Prague designed this tenement for the owner, S. Ellery Anderson, with B. Schaaf & Son as builder. The brick-faced building is four stories high and twenty feet wide, though it originally rose five stories. The Landmarks Preservation Commission notes that it and its neighbor at 118 were built as tenements, a sign that the block was still partly residential at that late date.

“Nos. 116 and 118 were built as tenements in 1877, an indication that this block was still being used for residential purposes at this late date.”

Photographs taped to the window of 116 Prince Street grow into the exhibition Here Is New York

Within two days of the September 11 attacks, messages and photographs taped to the window at this address prompted four organizers, among them Gilles Peress, to start an open exhibition. It accepted images from anybody, professional or not. Yolanda Cuomo and Peress designed the resulting book, and its proceeds went to the Children's Aid Society to benefit victims' families.

“Within two days of the attacks, messages and photographs taped to the window of 116 Prince Street inspired an exhibition…”
