In 1839 Joseph Depew, a builder, put up Nos. 12 and 14 East 10th Street. The Landmarks Preservation Commission notes that he may also have built the neighboring Nos. 8 and 10, which went up three years later with the same cornice line. No. 12 keeps its original pilastered doorway with palmetto capitals, a wide stoop and its iron handrailings. A parapet with stone urns was added to the roofline in the 1920s.
