Architect Charles Abbott French designed the seven-story brick loft building at 13-17 Crosby Street, built in 1901 for owner Inga M. Olsen. It took the place of three brick buildings from the early nineteenth century. The commission places it among the larger loft buildings then replacing SoHo's small houses, many of which had already been converted to industrial use.

Small manufacturers fill 13-17 Crosby Street, from toys to solder to light fixtures

The commission's research traces a run of small businesses through the building. Tenants included S. Langsdorf & Co., leather goods, in 1907; the Nonpareil Toy Co. in 1915; the Jonick Sirken Co., a light-fixture maker, in 1930; and the New York Solder Co. from 1934 to 1946. Hopewell Sportswear was listed in 1979 and Vespa Motor Scooters in 2003, and the upper floors became offices in the 1990s.

“S. Langsdorf & Co., leather goods (1907); the Nonpareil Toy Co. (1915); the Jonick Sirken Co., manufacturer of light fixtures (1930); the New York Solder Co. (1934-46)…”
