  1. 1845

Henry V. Shaddle has a Greek Revival house built at Prince Street and Laurens Street

Around 1844 to 1845 a three-story brick dwelling with a basement was built here for Henry V. Shaddle, when SoHo was a settled residential neighborhood of row houses, a few detached homes, small shops and stables. Its projecting window sills and molded lintels are typical Greek Revival details. Laurens Street is now called West Broadway, so the house is listed as 448 West Broadway and 151 Prince Street.

“…built in c.1844-45 for Henry V. Shaddle at a time when the SoHo area continued to develop as a stable residential community…”

  2. 1870

The widening of Laurens Street strips a bay and the stoop from the Shaddle house

Around 1870 the city widened Laurens Street, now West Broadway, and the house at the corner of Prince Street lost one bay on its Prince Street side along with its front stoop. A new West Broadway facade with matching windows was built at the same time. A cast-iron storefront was inserted later, possibly in the later nineteenth century, as the neighborhood shifted toward commercial use.
