In 1882 the architect George W. Dacunha designed an irregularly shaped provisions warehouse here for Augustus C. Beckstein, who packed meat and also developed real estate. It replaced four of the five frame buildings that had stood on the site in the mid-nineteenth century. The building runs through the block to Leonard Street, where it is numbered 7-9, and after a fire in 1895 Beckstein hired the architect Thomas R. Jackson to rebuild it.

Franklin Baylies gives 155-159 Franklin Street a new front matching its Leonard Street side
In 1902 Beckstein commissioned Franklin Baylies to design a new Franklin Street front and an addition on the lot's northeast corner. Built in 1902-03, it echoes the neo-Grec Leonard Street front, with a two-story base of brick pilasters and stone banding, and a slightly projecting section near its center.
“In 1902 Franklin Baylies, an architect responsible for other buildings in this district, was commissioned to design an extension at the northeastern corner of the lot and a new Franklin Street facade.”
