A five-story Italianate tenement goes up at 163 Mott Street beside its twin at 161

The Chinatown and Little Italy Historic District nomination dates 163 Mott Street to 1875. The brick tenement rises five stories and is four bays wide, with window hoods topped by pediments and a cornice that survives intact. It forms a pair with 161 Mott and matches the tenements on Mott Street below Canal.

Seamstress Maria Barbella, who lived at 163 Mott Street, goes on trial for killing Domenico Cataldo

Maria Barbella came from Italy in 1892 and lived with her family at 163 Mott Street, in a building that predates the present one of 1920, while she earned $8 a week as a factory seamstress. After Domenico Cataldo, a shoeshine man she had been seeing, put off marrying her and then ended the relationship, she cut his throat with a razor on East 13th Street. Her trial opened in July 1895 and ended in a death sentence, which brought clemency appeals from around the world. A new trial in 1897 acquitted her.
