Lebanon Hospital moves to a newer building on the Grand Concourse at Mount Eden Parkway

Jonas Weil started the Lebanon Hospital Association with a $10,175 gift after struggling to get care for a friend, at a time when Jewish immigration was straining the area's hospitals. Chartered in 1890, the hospital opened in 1893 at Westchester Avenue and 151st Street and expanded there over the following decades. In 1946 it relocated to a newer building on the Grand Concourse at Mount Eden Parkway.

Lebanon Hospital and Bronx Hospital merge into the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center

By the late 1950s Lebanon Hospital and the Bronx Hospital, founded in 1911 on Fulton Avenue, were already sharing staff and resources, and in 1962 they formally combined as Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. The center has two major facilities: the Grand Concourse site, a 17-story tower for medical, specialty, outpatient and emergency care, and the Fulton site, which turned to psychiatric, substance abuse and nursing care.

Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center takes the new name BronxCare Health System

Later in 2017, the organization dropped the Bronx-Lebanon name and became BronxCare Health System. Besides the hospital on the Grand Concourse and the Fulton Avenue building for psychiatric, addiction and skilled nursing care, it runs more than 30 ambulatory medical practices in the community, and since 2016 it has been a teaching hospital for the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

“On December 6, 2017, the organization's name was changed from Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center to BronxCare Health System.”
