In 1861 the department-store merchant A. T. Stewart had a cast-iron store and loft building erected at 18 Mercer Street, to the design of John Kellum. It rose five stories, and a sixth was added later, with its window openings filled in and its capitals and ornament lost. The landmark survey notes that its iron front was listed in the Badger foundry catalog.

John Kellum, Stewart's architect, designs 18 Mercer Street among a few buildings in SoHo

John Kellum (1807-1871) worked for A. T. Stewart, the city's first department-store magnate, and designed his second major store at Broadway and 10th Street between 1859 and 1862. Stewart's mansion at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street and the Working Women's Hotel were also his work. In the SoHo-Cast Iron district, the landmark report credits him with a small group of buildings, among them 18 Mercer Street of 1861.
