In 1911 the G. X. Mathews Company built 1896 Cornelia Street, also known as 854 Woodward Avenue, as the corner building of an eight-flat row designed by Louis Allmendinger. Besides its four-bay front, it has a long nine-bay side wall with geometric amber brickwork, two fire escapes and a one-story brick extension at the rear. A historic pressed-metal storefront column remains at the base, but by 2010 the storefronts had been filled in with brick and paired windows.
