    April 6

A cabinetmaker's shop fire destroys the earlier house on this lot, one of four lost on Charlton Street

The present house at 19 Charlton Street replaced an earlier two-story brick house on the same lot. Around 6 a.m. on April 6, 1840, a fire broke out in a cabinetmaker's shop in the rear yards behind 19 and 21 Charlton. The New-York American reported that it spread to the brick houses at 19, 21, 23 and 25, which it said were destroyed. The neighboring house at 27 was badly damaged, with losses put above $1,000.

    July 4

A stray shot from the back of 19 Charlton Street wounds a neighbor on King Street

On Independence Day 1855, Mrs. Phillips of 32 King Street was sitting on her back stoop when a ball struck her in the thigh. The New York Times reported the next morning that the pistol or gun had been fired from the rear of 19 Charlton Street. Her brother-in-law ran to help, and a ball passed through his trousers and lodged in the ground. Firing pistols into the air on the Fourth was a common practice of the era.
