Built in 1907 in the third of developer August Jacob's building campaigns, No. 1978 is one of four houses in the nine-house east-side row faced in the dark honey-colored brick also used on the tenements at the Tremont Avenue corner. Architect John Hauser gave it an arched doorway with keyed blocks, limestone cresting and bellflower corbels. The report found its original wood sash and its wrought-iron stoop and areaway railings still in place, with a black-painted cornice.

“Nos. 1970, 1972, 1978, and 1980 (plates 13, 14, 15, and 16) are faced with the same dark honey-colored brick as the corner tenements on Tremont…”
