A filling station replaces a 1921 storage building on the West Broadway lot

After Varick Street was extended south, the lot took its present shape, and a three-story building for storage and offices went up on it in 1921. In 1926 a filling station replaced that building. The station was in turn torn down for the present building. This describes earlier structures on the site.

In 1932 James Hopkins built this 27-foot-wide, one-story building, designed by the Brooklyn Heights architect Emil Guterman. It served as the automobile repair shop of William Pomerantz of Brooklyn, who leased it. Only the footprint and stepped parapet survive from its original look, and at the time of the report the occupant was the Ideal Trading Company, which imported and exported seeds, spices and agricultural goods.
