  1. 1912

Giovanni Battista Perazzo opens his own undertaking business at 199 Bleecker Street

Perazzo was born in Genoa and came to the United States at 13. He learned the funeral trade working for Charles Baciagalupo, who ran a funeral home on Mulberry Street, and later married Baciagalupo's sister Caroline. Moving to Greenwich Village, he started his own undertaking firm at 199 Bleecker in 1912, twelve years before the present building was put up on the lot in 1924-25. He died on September 12, 1950.

Perazzo's six-story Neo-Renaissance tenement rises with a funeral church on the ground floor

Matthew W. Del Gaudio designed this six-story brick-and-cast-stone building in 1924-25 for Gianbatista Perazzo, with apartments above and a commercial ground floor. Stained-glass windows sit over the entrances. The storefront has housed the Perazzo Funeral Church, later called the Perazzo Funeral Home, and today the Greenwich Village Funeral Home.
