    August 21

August Jacob starts a second row of two-family houses on the east side of Morris Avenue

Work on 1988 through 1998 Morris Avenue, together with 108 East 179th Street, began on August 21, 1906, two months after developer August Jacob broke ground on the houses across the street. His architect, John Hauser, made this the first group on the block to rise three full stories. The houses were still planned for two families each, and pairs alternate between red and buff brick.

“The second campaign, which began two months after the first, August 21, 1906, comprised the last six houses on the east side of Morris…”

Carved profiles of a man and a woman flank the front steps of No. 1992

No. 1992 and its neighbor No. 1994 form the red-brick pair of their row, with arched doorways whose moldings rest on corbels carved as curved oak leaves. In place of iron stoop railings, No. 1992 has concrete wing walls with cartouches showing a mustached man on the left and a woman wearing her hair in a bun on the right. According to the Landmarks Preservation Commission report, a resident of the house believed the faces represent the first owners, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolf Seus.

“…on the left a man with moustache (but no goatee) and on the right a woman wearing her hair in a bun…”
