The Cedar Tavern moves to 24 University Place, later a magnet for painters

The Cedar Tavern, founded in 1866 on Cedar Street downtown, relocates to 24 University Place in 1945. Through the 1950s it draws Abstract Expressionist painters such as Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, and writers including Frank O'Hara and Gregory Corso. The tavern closes in April 1963 after the building is sold and demolished, and it reopens in 1964 three blocks north. The 24 University Place site is now a full-block residential building.
