Police corner a gunman on the roof of 21 Bedford Street

After hearing a gunshot near Houston and Hancock Streets, Sergeant Camille Pierne chased a man into the neighboring building at 19 Bedford while Patrolman Dennis Mitchell was sent up through No. 21 to meet him across the rooftops. Mitchell came out of the roof hatch at No. 21 to find the man running at him with a pistol, fired once and missed, and wrestled him while Pierne freed himself from a barbed-wire fence. The two officers dragged the man back from the roof edge; he was 21-year-old barber Benjamin Lotta of Cornelia Street.
