A frame house and shop with a brick front is paired with Captain Rose's house next door

An earlier building on this lot, a late 18th-century house and shop, was the partner of the surviving Captain Joseph Rose house at 273 Water Street. Both houses had frame structures fronted in brick and shared a low cartway on the ground floor that ran back to the wharf. The owner of No. 271, a Mr. Laight, was noted as building in 1781, and both houses were certainly standing by 1793, when the cartway between them was paved.

“This brick building of 1875 replaces a late 18th-century house and shop that was once part of a pair with the still extant building at No. 273…”

The present building at 271 Water Street dates from 1875 and was put up by Marc Eidlitz, a building contractor who was the nephew of the architect Leopold Eidlitz, designer of St. George's Church on Stuyvesant Square. Its storefront is cast iron, with paneled square columns carrying an architrave and cornice. The Landmarks Preservation Commission notes that the dentilled brick cornice is a Greek Revival feature that looked old-fashioned by 1875.
