An earlier Federal mansion at 3 Washington Square North becomes a foundling hospital
Long before any later construction here, the Sisters of Charity moved the New York Foundling Hospital into the former mansion of J. Thorne at 3 Washington Square North on January 1, 1870. The hospital, founded in October 1869 to care for abandoned infants, had taken in 123 babies in its first two months. It moved to East 68th Street in 1873, and the old mansion was torn down in 1884.
