  1. 1934

The Army base opens Public School 26, designed by Eric Kibbon

Public School 26 went up in 1934, when the Governors Island base was expanding to meet the needs of the 16th Regiment. Architect Eric Kibbon, who practiced in New York in the 1930s, gave the one-story building a neo-Georgian design to match the new housing nearby. A cast stone eagle fills the pediment over the entrance pavilion, a fitting touch for a school on a military post.

  2. 1970

A larger island school opens and the old Public School 26 becomes a child care center

Wings were added to the east and north sides of the school in 1959-60, in a style that matched the original. Around 1970 a bigger public school was built on part of the island outside today's historic district boundary. Afterward the 1934 building was converted into a daycare center, called the Child Development Center in the landmarks report.
