James and Thomas Goadby, makers of iron grates, had this four-story store and loft erected in 1864-65 on the site of two older structures, one of which housed a tinsmith. The Italianate front is only about 19 feet wide, with arched window openings and a bracketed metal cornice, and the building runs through the block to Lispenard Street. Occupants over the years included a children's-clothing manufacturer, liquor merchants and a printing office.

Pearl Paint closes for good after about 50 years of selling art supplies at 308 Canal Street

The red gates of Pearl Paint came down for the last time on April 17, 2014, ending roughly 50 years at 308 Canal Street and more than 80 in the neighborhood. The store had opened in 1933 on Church Street selling house paint, and its six floors held everything from professional painters' and printmakers' materials to beads and crayons. As it closed, a salesman of 29 years, Ken Colman, recalled the celebrities he had helped, among them Gene Wilder, Tony Bennett and Anthony Quinn.
