324 Bowery is one of five brick houses with commercial ground floors that builder John Murtha put up in 1869 at the corner of Bowery and Bleecker Street, now numbered 320-324 Bowery and 1-5 Bleecker. Architects David and John Jardine, Scottish-born, designed them for Benjamin Stephens, who owned the land from 1830 to 1908. The commission says they were among the brothers' earliest works.

Fur firms and a hardware store fill the Jardine buildings at 320-324 Bowery

Over the twentieth century the corner buildings at 320-324 Bowery housed many fur businesses while the neighborhood was a center of the fur trade. Shapiro Hardware Co. was there from 1930 through at least 1980. Immigrant families lived upstairs, among them the families of John Re, Nicholas Camera and Agatha Licata.
