Village Developers build a sixteen-story Art Deco apartment tower at Bleecker and Christopher Streets

Village Developers erected the sixteen-story brick apartment house at 330-338 Bleecker Street in 1930-1931 to designs by H. I. Feldman. Wide horizontal bands run between its windows, set against shallow vertical piers above a stone base. The Landmarks Preservation Commission saw the influence of the French Exposition of decorative arts in the stepped parapet above its front door.

The Roosevelts hang a painting by resident Beulah Bettersworth in the White House

Beulah Bettersworth, who studied at the Art Students League, lived at 95 Christopher Street with her husband, the illustrator Howard Bettersworth, in the early 1930s. Her wintry view of Christopher Street was in an April 1934 show at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington of more than 500 Public Works of Art Project pieces. President and Mrs. Roosevelt chose it as one of 32 works for the White House. She later won two post office mural commissions in Mississippi.
