  1. 1802

A grocer's frame house with a brick front goes up at Bleecker and Christopher Streets

The corner house at 329 Bleecker Street was built sometime between 1802 and 1810 for William Patterson, a grocer who lived above his ground-floor store, as shopkeepers then did. It is frame construction with a Flemish-bond brick face. Neighbors at Nos. 331 to 337 were once part of the same Patterson property, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission notes that Patterson lived at No. 331 until his death.

“…erected some time between 1802 and 1810, with a store at street level ... William Patterson, a grocer, who lived at No. 329 over his store…”

    June 18

Berenice Abbott photographs the corner grocery

The photographer Berenice Abbott captured this corner store on June 18, 1936. In her picture a schoolboy in a tie sits on the cut-stone curb while a woman reaches up to drop a letter into a mailbox. Christopher Street runs one-way in the opposite direction from today. The picture is now in the New York Public Library collection.

  3. 1997

The Bleecker Street Grocery closes after nearly a century as a corner food store

Nicola La Rocca ran a fruit stand here at the turn of the twentieth century, and the corner remained a grocery for close to a hundred years. Locals knew it by the metal sign reading FANCY FRUITS DAIRY. As rents rose with the arrival of trendy shops, it ended in 1997 and a quick succession of businesses followed, among them Bronca Pizza and a fast-food deli.
