    35-41 76th Street rises in 1921-22 within Hawthorne Court's block-long row on 76th Street

Permit NB 7552-1921 was filed for this five-story building, one of seven contiguous Hawthorne Court buildings on the east side of 76th Street. Their backs face seven more on 77th Street across a broad common garden. Architect George H. Wells finished it with brick banding at the first story, stone sills and keystoned lintels, arched fifth-floor windows and a balustraded cornice, and gave it one of his projecting entrance porticoes.

“Hawthorne Court, built in 1921-22 and designed by George H. Wells, is one of the characteristic garden apartment projects in Jackson Heights.”
