Sisters of Charity open St. Vincent's Hospital on the Bard Avenue grounds

The hospital on this site began in 1903 as St. Vincent's Hospital, a 74-bed facility run by the Sisters of Charity of New York. It started out in the former Garner mansion, a stone house with a mansard roof built by Charles Taber, which still stands on the grounds. The hospital grew and modernized over the following decades, and the sisters' health system later also took over the old U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Stapleton as Bayley Seton Hospital.

“St. Vincent's Hospital, was opened in 1903 as a 74-bed facility under the direction of the Sisters of Charity of New York…”

St. Vincent's on Staten Island becomes Richmond University Medical Center

Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center of Manhattan took control of the Staten Island hospital in 1999 during a restructuring of the city's Catholic health care network. Bayonne Medical Center bought the hospital in 2006 and spun it off, and on January 1, 2007, it became Richmond University Medical Center. Although the new hospital is largely without religious affiliation, the cross on its main building was kept, while one on the Villa Building came down.

“…a cross that adorned St. Vincent's Hospital, on its main building, remains; another cross, on the Villa Building, has been removed…”
