Kavy & Kavovitt design a Romanesque-inspired apartment house for Hayes Construction Corp.

Hayes Construction Corp. built this six-story apartment house in 1928-29 on the end of the block along 37th Avenue between 80th and 81st Streets, with Kavy & Kavovitt as architects. Patterned brickwork, soldier courses and arched corbel tables dress the facades, and corner towers with open loggias and pitched parapets rise at the roof. Each side-street court has a brick entrance pavilion with a segmental arch and niches; on 81st Street the original doors survive, and the metal lamps beside them appear to be original.

A shop at 37-05 80th Street has been cut into the building's side facade
Stores were part of the plan from the beginning, lining 37th Avenue and turning one bay onto each side street. When the Landmarks Preservation Commission described the building in its 1993 Jackson Heights report, a further commercial space, addressed 37-05 80th Street, had been added in the southern part of the 80th Street front. The original shopfronts had all been replaced, though some transoms, brick piers and the brick fascia lingered behind newer signs. The 80th Street entrance doors were also new.
