In 1851 the mason Smith Woodruff, from a well-known family of builders, erected six brick Italianate houses on the north side of Barrow Street, Nos. 38 through 48, and this house is the first of them. They replaced a row of shops, factories and stables that had belonged to Timothy Whittemore. Woodruff lived in No. 48 for a short time. No. 38 later gained a small polygonal bay window set inside the frame of its original pedimented doorway.
