  1. 1925

39-72 is built in 1925 sharing a cross gable with its neighbor and a terrace cut into its roof

The Landmarks Preservation Commission dates this Hamilton Court row on 47th Street to 1925. 39-72 is the third house in the row, the last of three with slate-shingled gable roofs, and it shares a cross gable with 39-74/76 next door. From 46th Street its four-bay back wall is partly visible, where the gable roof is cut away to make a third-floor terrace with a metal railing, and a brick chimney rises between its rear and that of 39-74/76.

The Commission's 2007 designation report found the back of 39-72 much altered: the first-floor rear porch was filled in with vinyl, and the third-floor terrace was sided in horizontal and diagonal vinyl behind a metal railing. In front, the enclosed porch was clad in vinyl around a new decorative wood door surround. Brick steps with cast-stone treads led up from a yard edged by a brick cheek wall whose piers carry cast-stone finials.
