No. 39-78 was built in 1926 as part of an eleven-house Washington Court row on the west side of 46th Street in Sunnyside Gardens. It is one of six flat-roofed houses in the middle of the row, set back from the street line, and together with No. 39-76 it stands a little closer to the sidewalk than the other four. The Landmarks Preservation Commission's district report names it as the only house in the row where the historic porch infill survives.

“The flat roof, center six buildings are recessed from the streetwall, with the fifth and sixth buildings slightly less recessed... historic porch infill remains at 39-78…”
