The Ninth National Bank puts up a four-story Second Empire bank here, an earlier building on the site
Organized in February 1864 with $1 million in capital, the Ninth National Bank first opened at 363 Broadway. By 1870 it had acquired two lots a block north at 407 and 409 Broadway, where it built an earlier building on this site: a four-story stone bank in the French Second Empire style, with a fish-scale-tiled mansard roof and paired Corinthian columns, a scaled-down echo of the City Hall Post Office then being planned. The Times thought the offices commodious but not pretentious. The bank drew depositors from many trades and kept a conservative reputation.

The Ninth National Bank finds its late president had stolen about $400,000 over seven years
John Hill began at the Ninth National Bank as its first paying teller, became cashier, and in 1877 took over as its third president. After he died in 1891 at age 55, the bank, then in its earlier building on this site, discovered that since 1884 he had pocketed repaid loans while leaving them on the books and had shifted securities into loan envelopes whenever examiners came by. The shortfall was about $400,000, nearly $10 million today. By August the bank announced that it had largely recovered from the Hill scare.

Designed by Archibald F. Gilbert and built by the H. A. Harris Co. in 1926-27, the two-story bank has a steel frame and a limestone facade with applied Ionic pilasters, a dentiled entablature, a balustraded parapet and an arched central entrance, with a clock set in the center bay above the door. It replaced the Ninth National Bank's marble-fronted Second Empire office of 1869-70 by Ebenezer L. Roberts. By 1992 the bank was known as the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company.
