In 1909 the architect Charles H. Cullen designed a store-and-loft building at 405-409 West 13th Street for Colonel John Jacob Astor IV. It was among the improvements Astor oversaw in the Gansevoort Market district. Astor, who held about 700 parcels of New York real estate, died on the Titanic three years later, and his properties passed to his son Vincent.
