Around 1835 and 1836 the prolific builder Ephraim H. Wentworth put up eight two-and-a-half-story houses on East 2nd Street, numbers 22 to 36. Only four still stand, nos. 26, 28, 30 and 36, the last on the Second Avenue corner. The Landmarks Preservation Commission counts them among the significant clusters of early row houses that survive on East 2nd and East 3rd Streets.

In 1869 the architect Julius Boekell designed a three-story Italianate extension to the rear of the old row house at 36 East 2nd Street, facing Second Avenue. This addition is now numbered 39 or 41 Second Avenue, and a break in the brickwork still marks where it joins the original house. The house itself began as a Greek Revival row house of three or three-and-a-half stories and was later raised to four.
