In 1825 Charles Oakley, an affluent lawyer who developed real estate, bought the block's eastern half, which lay between Barrow, Bleecker and Commerce Streets. The street, previously called Reason Street, took the name Barrow in 1828, after the first houses went up. That year No. 41 was finished, a two-and-a-half-story wood house with a Flemish-bond brick front, steep roof and dormer. A later double casement window and low pediment replaced the dormer.
