Peter and Francis Herter, German-born architects, designed this building for Harris and David Baum in 1889-90. Between 1887 and 1893 the brothers designed more than 100 Manhattan buildings, about fifty of them on the Lower East Side, and they also designed the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Creditors sued the firm in 1893 for nearly $30,000, and the partnership dissolved by 1899.

“…the 1889-90 Romanesque Revival style store and factory at 41 Great Jones Street dates from the period of the brothers’ greatest activity…”

Acme Sandblasting takes the ground floor of 41 Great Jones Street, replacing the garment and hat firms

Over the mid-twentieth century the loft was home to makers of garments, hats and caps, along with basket, caster and wheel firms. After World War II the garment and hat tenants left, and Acme Sandblasting has used the first floor since about 1959. Since the 1980s the building has also held live/work quarters for artists beside commercial and manufacturing firms.
