Edward Bertine starts the ten-house Keister row that includes No. 428

Edward D. Bertine, who had been a Manhattan milk dealer and grocer before city directories listed him as a builder in 1889-90, spent $63,500 gathering land on East 136th Street in 1891. That year he started ten houses along the street's southern side, Nos. 414 to 432, drawn by the architect George Keister. The Landmarks Preservation Commission called it one of the city's finest late-19th-century rows.

No. 428 keeps its scrolled gable and pointed-arched parlor windows at landmarking

When the Bertine Block Historic District was designated in 1994, No. 428 still had the scrolled gable and projecting third-floor bay with paired windows that echo No. 418, plus pointed-arched parlor-floor openings like those at Nos. 416 and 420. A damaged stained-glass transom survived over the parlor windows, along with the original wrought-iron stoop and areaway railings. The metal coping atop the gable had been taken off and the front door replaced.

“With its scrolled gable and projecting third-story bay with paired windows, No. 428 is similar to the house at No. 418.”
