Italian-born Bronx architect Michael A. Cardo takes on his only Fieldston commission

Michael A. Cardo (1887-1984) was born in Italy, trained at Cooper Union and practiced from a Bronx office from the 1920s into the 1950s or later, designing homes and commercial buildings there and in Manhattan. The Fieldston report credits him with a single house in the district, this neo-Classical one of 1935-36.

“Michael A. Cardo was born in Italy and studied at Cooper Union. He maintained an office in the Bronx from the 1920s until at least the 1950s.”

Plans for this brick house were filed in 1935, and it was finished in 1936 for its original owner, Amelia Miloni, to a design by Michael A. Cardo. The landmarks report reads it as a spare version of the neo-Classical style: cast-stone quoins at the corners, splayed lintels with keystones, a slate hipped roof and two large brick chimneys with polygonal tops. Apart from replacement window sashes, the house has changed little.
