Wilson Court goes up with this five-bay apartment house as its only building facing 43rd Avenue

The Landmarks Preservation Commission dates Wilson Court to 1928: eight apartment houses, seven joined along 47th Street and this one turned toward 43rd Avenue. All share brick fronts trimmed in Art Deco brickwork of diamonds, zigzags, corbels and dentils. Here a gabled tower marks the center bay, its diamond-shaped opening since plugged with concrete, and only the tower still holds the original six-over-six wood windows.

“Wilson Court is a series of eight apartment buildings, with seven buildings facing 47th Street and one facing 43rd Avenue (46-16 43rd Avenue).”

Landmarks survey finds one historic ginkgo left in the long yard behind Wilson Court

Because Wilson Court fills only part of its block, it has no interior garden court; instead a long grassy yard runs behind the buildings. A concrete walk starts just west of 46-16 43rd Avenue and follows the rear walls to the end of the court. When the district was designated, one large historic ginkgo still stood there, and a chain-link fence divided the yard from apartment houses on 46th Street that the City Housing Corporation did not build.

“…one large, historic Ginkgo tree remains in the yard…”
