Cleverdon & Putzel design a seven-story loft at 50 Bond Street for developers Weil and Mayer

In 1896-97 the architects Cleverdon & Putzel produced this seven-story Classical Revival loft for the real estate developers Jonas Weil and Bernhard Mayer. It was one of several buildings the firm designed for the pair in what is now the NoHo Historic District Extension, as older dwellings gave way to commercial structures. A two-story limestone base supports brick floors, with two-story terra-cotta Ionic columns near the top.

  2. 1929

From 1929 hat makers, rag dealers and tool-and-die firms fill 50 Bond Street

From 1929 the building was occupied by hat makers, rag and fabric dealers, and a few furniture and tool-and-die companies. Some stayed for decades: Etna Tool & Die from about 1959 to 1986, Craftmade Hats from about 1965 to 1993, and Regent Hat Co., listed from about 1959 onward. By the mid-1970s, with Manhattan manufacturing in decline, residential tenants were moving into empty floors, and the building later became a live/work condominium for artists.
