In 1909 developer Henry Schlachter built a group of residential buildings on the south side of Catalpa Avenue, the next to go up in what is now the Ridgewood South Historic District after a few houses on Woodbine Street. Louis Berger & Co. designed them. The Landmarks Preservation Commission traces the row to three 1909 new-building permits, numbers 144, 204 and 205.

Built under permit NB 205-09 with its neighbors at 57-20 and 57-22, the tenement has a pale yellow brick front with rough-faced buff brick arches over the windows and a cornice with swags. The commission's survey found the brownstone stoop, its railing, and the areaway railing, newel posts and gate still historic, though the door hood over the central entry had been taken off.

“…historic brownstone stoop and railing; raised concrete areaway; historic areaway railing, newel posts, and gate…”
