Brooklyn mason Christian Doenecke and his wife Katherina build the row that begins at 58-03 69th Avenue

Christian Doenecke, born in 1859 in Helmershansen, Germany, reached the United States in 1883 and was working as a mason in Brooklyn by 1894. With his wife Katherina Kaeppel Doenecke, who was named as owner of many of his projects, he put up the houses from 58-03 to 58-47 69th Avenue in 1909, all drawn by Louis Berger. His firm, Christian Doenecke & Co., was dissolved in 1931.

“The Doeneckes built 58-03 to 58-47 69th Avenue (1909) and 59-29 to 59-35 Catalpa Avenue (1913), all designed by Berger…”

Filed under new-building permit 3213 of 1909 with Katherina Doenecke as owner, the two-story house is faced in orange iron-spot brick with brownstone and limestone trim. It has a full-height rounded bay, a bracketed hood over the door and a metal cornice trimmed with dentils and festoons. It opens a group of six two-family houses running to 58-13, and a one-story brick garage was later added at the back of the lot on Catalpa Avenue.
