St. Matthias builds a convent for the Sisters of Notre Dame who run its school

The Sisters of Notre Dame came to St. Matthias in 1910 to run the parish school, and in 1914 the parish built this convent for them. Francis J. Berlenbach, Jr. designed it in a Neo-classical style with a Dutch Renaissance-inspired central parapet, using a yellow Kreischer brick a shade lighter than that of the church-school and rectory. The contractor was the German-born mason Herman Veit.

“A convent was erected in 1914 to house the Sisters of Notre Dame, who had joined the parish in 1910 to take charge of the parochial school.”
