    C.B.J. Snyder designs a new P.S. 1 north of Tottenville's 1878 schoolhouse

When Greater New York was consolidated in 1898, Tottenville's Westfield District School No. 5 was renumbered Public School No. 1, Borough of Richmond. In 1905-06 a new school building went up north of the old one, designed by C.B.J. Snyder, the Board of Education's Superintendent of School Buildings, and the new building took over the P.S. 1 name. Snyder was responsible for many of the city's school buildings, several of them now landmarks.

“In 1905-06, a new school was erected north of the former Westfield District School No. 5 ... C.B.J. Snyder, designed the new building…”
