Joseph Meyerrose, elected Queens County sheriff in 1903, builds this house as part of a small row

Joseph Meyerrose, born in 1859, kept working his father's farm and around the turn of the century began selling parts of it to builders; he was elected Queens County Sheriff in 1903. He then developed more of the property himself, building three small rows, among them 59-13 to 59-19 Putnam Avenue in 1914. He used Louis Berger & Company for all of these buildings, and he lived in his own house on Forest Avenue until at least 1920.

“…he built three small rows of buildings at 66-63 to 66-69 Forest (1914) and 59-12 to 59-16 Madison Street (1913) and 59-13 to 59-19 Putnam Avenue (1914).”

Louis Berger & Company designs this two-story brick row house with an L-shaped stone stoop

Filed under NB 3034-1914, this Renaissance Revival row house of two stories and a basement still has its historic L-shaped stoop of rusticated stone, whose ornate cast-iron railings, grille and newel posts survive, and a cast-iron fence around the areaway. A dogtooth brick course and a stone cornice cross the facade at the second floor, and a wide frieze with a modillioned cornice crowns it. The front door and awning are later replacements.
