Built in 1910, 59-17 71st Avenue keeps its stoop while its first-floor windows become shop windows

Built in 1910 as part of an eight-building run of flats on permit NB 1287-1910, this house took a different route to commerce than 59-11 to 59-15. Instead of removing the stoop and lowering the ground floor, its first-story windows were enlarged and turned into show windows, now shaded by box awnings and security gates. The stoop survives with replacement ironwork, along with a brownstone water table, Maltese-cross pilaster capitals and the original pressed-metal cornice.
