Builder Paul Stier was the original owner of this three-story flats building, put up around 1909 under New Building application 1378-1909 to designs by Louis Berger & Company. It is one of 17 flats buildings on the block front from 59-04 to 59-36 Catalpa Avenue, filed together with two store-and-flats buildings at 59-02 Catalpa Avenue and 68-56 60th Street. Its front is beige iron-spot brick with brownstone and limestone trim and panels of rough-faced brick.

  2. 1909

Paul Stier, Ridgewood's biggest developer, is in his busiest years when he builds 59-32 Catalpa

Paul Stier, born in Mecklenburg, Germany, in 1874, crossed to America alone as a teenager in 1891 and apprenticed as a mason in Buffalo. After moving to the Ridgewood area in 1902 he became its largest developer, erecting about half the row houses in what is now the Central Ridgewood Historic District. From 1907 to 1909 he built 392 of his 481 buildings there; a small street, Stier Place, carries his name.

“His most active years were from 1907 to 1909, when he built 392 of the 481 buildings that he eventually developed within the historic district.”
