Mathias Masem and Joseph Breiner were the original owners of this two-family house, filed as new building 300 of 1911 and designed by Louis Berger & Company. Four bays wide, it has three of them in a curved projection, a rough-faced brownstone stoop and incised window lintels, with the entrance lintel resting on foliated brackets. The basement keeps historic security grilles, while the stoop and water table have been painted and an aluminum awning added.

Louis Berger, architect of more than 5,000 Ridgewood and Bushwick buildings, designs this house

Louis Berger, whose firm drew the plans for this house, was born in Rheinpfalz, Germany, in 1875, arrived in America as a young boy in 1880, and made Ridgewood his home from 1892. He studied at Pratt Institute, apprenticed with Carrere & Hastings and opened his own office in Bushwick in 1895, specializing in tenement houses and the laws that governed them. Between 1895 and 1930 he was architect of record for more than 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick, and he also served as president of the Brooklyn Society of Architects.

“Berger was known to have been the architect of record for over 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick between 1895 and 1930.”
